Apogon lineatus

Abnormal eggs without yolk (arrows)

1. Contributor: Gen Kume (Aquatic Sciences)
2. Scientific name: Apogon lineatusTemminck and Schlegel, 1842
3. Characteristics: Apogon lineatus is a paternal mouthbrooder, inhabiting sandy or muddy bottoms of coastal inlets to a depth of 100 m, from Japan to the South China Sea and Indo-West Pacific. In also Kagoshima Bay, the species is found over sandy or muddy bottoms. Interestingly, a portion of each brood is occupied by abnormal eggs lacking yolk in the species. Of course, embryo development does not advance in such eggs. The reasons why females lay such curious eggs remain a mystery. (2015.9.6)
