3. Scientific name: Plecoglossus altivelis ryukyuensis Nishida, 1988
4. Characteristics: Wild population is distributed only in Amami-Oshima, Kagoshima Prefecture and designated as endangered now. They are morphologically similar to a subspecies Plecoglossus altivelis altivelis, but, their maximum size is smaller. They are amphidromous fish and their larvae and juveniles are seen in estuarine and coastal waters from winter to spring.
