The faculties of fisheries conduct education and researches on the science and technology relevant to the nature of and human activities in the aqua-sphere, including fisheries. There is an increasing importance of this field in response to the societal needs of food security, food safety and environmental conservation. The Faculty of Fisheries, Kagoshima University
is one of the rare tertiary institutions in Japan, which accomplish the comprehensive education and researches in these fields. The Faculty possesses the Department of Fisheries which is composed of five divisions namely; Aquatic Science, Fisheries Resource Sciences, Marine Food Sciences, Fisheries Economics and Aquatic Environment Science. The Faculty has developed its capability in both manpower production and basic and applied researches in a range from the aquatic environment and resources to their industrial utilisation and consumption. Its master and doctoral programmes provide, nowadays, enriched education and researches.
The objectives of the education and researches for the Faculty are sustainable development and rational utilisation of fishery resources, conservation of aquatic environment on the aquatic ecosystems and international contribution and engagement in local fisheries. The principle of the Faculty has been field-oriented education and researches. In order to achieve this, the Faculty is equipped with well-balanced facilities such as Training Vessels, Kagoshima-maru and Nansei-maru together with the Education and Research Centre for Marine Resources and Environment. The Kagoshima-maru built in 2012 is one of the latest training vessels and her best capability over the world is now devoted to our education and researches. She is accredited as the Educational Core of on-Board Training in Tropical and Sub-Tropical Waters and accepts students from the regional universities. On the basis of the policy of ‘a faculty kind for students’, the Faculty has developed its unique education management system which is granted with the ISO 9001 accreditation, or one of the global quality assurance standards in industries and provide exciting education with heart afire.
While Kagoshima University has endeavored to link with Southeast Asian and South Pacific regions, the Faculty of Fisheries has conducted, in particular, a variety of international activities such as collaboration with the University of the Philippines and the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Centre, which is the world-largest fishery organization. The Faculty leads enhancement of international credibility of higher education in Japan. In addition to conventional academic activities, it has offered international technical dissemination and transfer and participated in official development assistance projects, which are renowned over world. On the other hand, it is conducting local community service programmes based on the needs in local fisheries with particular emphasis on those in remote islands.
The Faculty wishes to maintain the status of the world-renowned fisheries education and research institution encompassing over the tropical and sub-tropical aquatic belt on the globe.
